A guide to turning local access mode on or off.

Enabling local access mode

Local access mode has two ways to enable it:

Automatically - if the device is unable to connect to the cloud service

Local access mode will be enabled automatically in these circumstances:

  • After powering on, the device is unable to obtain an internet connection and connect to the cloud service within 5 minutes. This is to allow you to connect to your device and correct the connection issue.

  • If the device was able to connect to the Internet after powering up, but then subsequently loses its connection to the cloud service then it will automatically keep trying for 9 hours. If that is still unsuccessful then it will start local access mode.

As long as your device has been connected once, the web app will show your device's last known settings, on the presumption that the device is powered and able to be connected via local access mode:

Do you need to access local access mode to fix your device's internet connection settings as it's not connected to the cloud service?
Rebooting your device will force it to reconnect - if that fails you should be able to access local access mode after 5 minutes (after it fails).

Manually - if the device is connected and online in the web app

If your device is online then it has a working internet connection. You may use this option if you want to enable local access mode to configure another communications method (e.g. to configure Wi-Fi or use LAN 2 to connect cameras).

Steps:

  1. Log into the web app, and select the Devices option from the left menu.

  2. Find your device from the list and click on the settings icon at the bottom right of the device list item.

  3. From the three tabs at the top, select Configure.

  4. Scroll down to the Local Access mode section and select Change/Manage.

  5. Set the desired local access mode in the first setting:


    • Disable
      This will be its current status - local access mode is currently off.

    • Enable for LAN access only
      If your laptop/tablet/phone is on the same local network as your device then you only need to enable LAN access.

    • Enable for both Wi-Fi and LAN access
      If your device is not on a reachable network, your last option is to enable a local Wi-Fi access point directly on your device. Your device will start a hotspot with an SSID in the format of [Model Name]-[Serial Number]

  6. The second setting is the local access mode password. This is the password you will use to connect to the Wi-Fi hotspot (if enabled) and to log into the web interface. This is the current password, but you may change it if desired.

  7. Clicking Save will now instruct your device to start its web interface and (if requested) its Wi-Fi hotspot. The interface will now show you the IP addresses you can use to connect to your device.


You now have the two pieces of information you need to connect to your device - now you can access local access mode on your device.

Disabling local access mode

Repeat the above steps, but on step 5 you should select Disable.

Local access mode will also automatically disable itself after a period of inactivity.
