How do permissions work?

Find out more about out user roles, and what it allows them to do.

Types of user roles

There are three types of roles within the system:

  • Viewer

This role allows users to only view live feeds and receive analytic notifications.

  • Group manager

In addition to the permissions allocated to the Viewer role, this role allows users to configure their device's settings.

  • Administrators

This role allows users to manage global settings, control users and access, and allocate devices to groups.

This role is special and should be reserved for users who can be trusted as they will have access to all settings, recordings, and management functions. It shouldn't normally be used for everyday operational use of devices and has special rules in that regard - please the special rules section below for more details.

How are roles allocated to users?

All devices must be added to a group.

For Viewers/Group managers...

When you create a new user, you can add them to multiple groups with either of these permissions.

For every group they are a member of they can:

  • See the group and all devices within that group

  • View the video from all devices within that group

  • Receive notifications from all devices within that group

  • (Managers only) Configure all devices within that group

If you don't add them to a particular group they can't see that group or any of the devices within it.

For Administrators....

When you create a new Administrator they are created with system-wide permissions and don't need to be added to a group... with one exception. The next section explains how you need to configure administrator accounts for both administration and operational use.

Special rules for Administrators

Administrators automatically can see inside every group as this is required to assign devices and users to groups. They can see every device and configure every device.

They do not receive notifications from any devices by default! This is to avoid overloading admins with every notification from every device on the system,

To receive notifications from devices within a particular group they should add themselves to that group as a Group manager.
